Surviving In Generation Z Part 1: Food
By Joel Albus
Go Start Your Day Off Right! Make Eggs For A Extra Protein Boost. Breakfast Comes From The Words “Break” And “Fasting”. It Began As A Way Of Curbing The Hunger After Resting. If You Need A Good Mood Boost Bacon Or Croissants Can Perk Up Your Day Though If You Want To Stay Healthy It Can Be Cheap And Easy. If Your Want To Keep A Budget Of $30/Day I Recommend Eggs, Parfaits, Pancakes, Oatmeal Or Granola. Throw In Orange Or Apple Juice For A Refreshing Finish With Some Fruit On The Side.
Eggs
A Carton Of Eggs Is One Of The Cheapest Things To Buy. At $30/Day A Dozen Eggs Opens The Doors To Infinite Recipes. High In Protein With A Medium Shelf Life You Can Pair Eggs With Any Breakfast. Impress Your Guests Or Significant Other With Your Versatility And Mastery Of Cooking This Breakfast Standard.
Scrambled
Depending On How Many People You’re Cooking For I Suggest Starting Off With 3-5 Eggs. Turn Your Stove To Medium And Whisk The Eggs. Note That Butter Works Better Than Oil Though If You Add It Too Early Or If The Pan Is Too Hot You Might Burn The Butter. Oil Has A Higher Burning Point Than Butter Though It Causes The Eggs To Fry Up. If You Choose To Use Oil And It Starts To Smoke Your Pan Is Way Too Hot And You Should Restart. Before You Put The Eggs Inside, Add About 1/5th Water : Egg Ratio. Whisk And Start The Cooking Process. The Water Lets The Eggs Steam Up From The Inside And Makes Them Much More Fluffy. As The Eggs Near The Finishing Point Lift The Pan Off The Stove, The Heat From The Pan Is Enough To Finish The Cooking Process. Key Here Is Not To Let The Eggs Burn. Check The Bottom Constantly If Necessary. Add Chives Or Green Onion As A Garnish If You’re Cooking For Another Person. Turn Off The Stove, It Happens. Wipe Down First Then Serve.
Hard Boiled
Add Water To A Pot And Put 3-5 Eggs Inside. Make Sure The Water Reaches Too Te Top Of The Eggs. THEN Put The Pot On The Stove And Turn To Medium High Heat. Cover The Pot. When The Water STARTS To Boil Remove From Heat And Leave Covered On The Side For 10 Min. After Having It Sit, Remove The Cover And Wash Under Water. Peel And Serve.
Poached - In Water
Great In Ramen. If Making Instant Noodles Turn The Stove To Medium High And Begin Boiling Water. Before It Reaches A Boil Add Eggs ,Without Shell Ah, And A Minute Later Add The Noodles. Or If Making Poached Eggs On Its Own Add Vinegar To The Water, Not Much, Then Before The Water Reaches A Boil Add The Eggs. The Vinegar Keeps The Eggs From Spreading Around In The Water And Gives It That Restaurant Shape.
Sunny Side Up Or Easy Over
For The Best Sunny Side Up Or Easy Over Use Oil Over Medium Heat. Add Oil And Egg(s). If The Pan Starts Smoking The Oil Is Burning And You Need To Start Over Or The Eggs Are Going To Burn. If Making Sunny Side Up, Remove The Pan From Heat Once The Egg(s) Cook Near The Point Of The Yolk. You Can Add Butter At This Time. Salt And Pepper. If Making Easy Over, Swiftly Turn The Egg Over. You Might Need To Add More Oil Or Butter Tor Prevent The Yolk From Breaking. If You Haven’t Removed The Pan From The Heat Do This Now And Let The Heat From The Pan Finish The Cooking. When Removing The Egg From The Pan Be Careful Not To Break The Yolk. If Everything Went Right You Can Slide The Egg(s) Out Of The Pan.
Pancakes
The Cheapest Breakfast Food You Can Get Is Pancakes. Weather You’re Making Them From Scratch Or Using A Pancake Mix Is Up To You. I Find Pancake Mix Is Much Easier And I Don’t Want To Spend A Bunch Of Time In The Morning When I Can Be Doing Other Things. Pancake Mix Costs $5 And You Can Use It For 5-10 Breakfasts. On The Other Hand If You’re Planning On Making From Scratch You’re Going To Make Sure You Have Eggs, Flour, Salt, Milk, Yeast Or Baking Soda, And Vanilla (Optional). I Recommend Using The Mix, Even If Its A Bit More Unhealthy, And Adding Fruit Instead To Balance Out The Breakfast. Most Pancake Mixes Use Water And Eggs Meaning There Are Fresh Ingredients. Add The Required Things To The Mix And Whisk. The Best Consistency Is When The Mix Is Smooth Yet Viscous. Try Not To Over Beat The Eggs As This Makes The Pancakes Rubbery. If You Want To Get Extra Fancy, Add Some Fresh Fruit To The Mix, Such As Bannanas Or Blueberries. Use Butter Instead Of Oil, It Makes The Pancakes Golden Rather Than Fried. Turn The Pan To Medium Heat And Get A Spoon To Measure Out The Pancake Mix. If You Turn The Heat Up Too Much The Butter Is Going To Burn Before The Pancakes Finish Cooking. Remember That Pancakes Rise When You Cook Them. Mid Way Through Cooking You Might Want To Make Sure The Pancakes Aren’t Sticking to The Pan. When You See Bubbles Over The Surface Of The Mix It’s OK To Turn Them Over. If You Want Super Nice Pancakes Add More Butter Before Turning Them Over. For The First Few Batches You’re Going To Want To Check The Inside To Make Sure The Inside Is Cooked Though. The Worst Thing You Can Do Is Give Your Guest Or Significant Other Raw Dough To Start Off Their Day. If They Reach A Beautiful Golden Outside Though The Inside Isn’t Cooked Yet, Remove From The Heat And Keep Turning Them Over And Let The Heat From The Pan Finish Up The Cooking Process. Wipe Down the Kitchen Area Then Stack Up And Serve. Add More Fresh Fruits On Top With Some Powder Sugar To Give It A More Professional Finish. Serve With Maple Syrup In A Different Container Than The One You Buy It In For A Better Presentation. If You Want Dessert For Breakfast Add Strawberries And Whipped Cream (Homemade Is Better) With Choco Drizzle.
Parfait
Sticking To The $30/Day For Food You’re Going To Want To Buy Plain Yogurt. You Get A Huge Tub For $5-$10 Bucks With A Medium Shelf Life. Buy Your Favorite Fruits And Granola (Or Make Your Own) Or Substitute With Cereal. Honey Is A Staple, It Costs A Bit More Though It Makes Up For The Cost With It’s Antioxidant Properties. If You Get Sick, Or Have A Sore Throat, A Amazing Home Remedy Is To Coat Your Throat With A Spoon Of Honey. Honey Is A Natural Sweetener With Mild Anti-Viral, Anti-Fungal, And Anti-Bacterial Properties. Chop The Fruits Into Bite Size Pieces. Get A Cup Or Parfait Glass And Layer The Yogurt, Granola/Cereal, Honey, Fruits. You Can Make This This The Night Before And Saran Wrap If You Don’t Have Time In The Morning To Make Breakfast Or For A Mid-day Snack. Keep In Mind That The Granola/Cereal Is Going To Get Soggy Depending On What Type Or Brand You Use. If You Want Something Extra Top With Whipped Cream Or Grated Chocolate And A Cherry For Presentation.
Oatmeal
Hashbrowns
Potatoes Are A Few Of The Cheapest Things You Can Buy. Hashbrowns Arn’t The Most Healthy Thing Though It Can Be A Nice Surprise On Occasion. A Bag Of Potatoes Has A High Shelf Life And Costs Less Than $10. Peel With A Knife For Cooking Practice. Julienne (Cut Into Thin Pieces) And Heat The Pot To High. Add Oil To The Pot, You’re Going To Be Deep Frying. If You Have A Splatter Screen Get It Out Now Or Use Towels To Reduce Clean Up After. Dry The Potatoes And Add Flour Or If You Want Super Crispy, Use Corn Starch. Mix And Salt The Mixture And Add To The Pot. When The Potatoes Turn Golden And Stops Bubbling Remove From Heat And Dry The Oil Off. Add Extra Salt And Serve.
Fruits
A Important Part Of Breakfast Is Making It Nutritious. We Have One Body And We Need To Take Care Of It Everyday. Studies Show An Apple In The Morning Can Wake You Up More Than A Cup Of Coffee. If You Arn’t Adding It To Your Breakfast Add A Glass Of Apple Juice Or Orange Juice. A Huge Carton Costs $5-$10 At The Most And You Can Drink It For A Week Or More Depending. On The Other Hand You Can Get 5 Apples Or Oranges For The Same Price. If You Have Extra Time In The Day Make Fresh Orange Juice And Store It In The Fridge For The Morning. Making It From Scratch Isn’t Only Healthier, It’s Fresher, And Has Less Sugar And Preservatives. A Variety Of Fruits Can Be A Good Change Of Pace Vs. Eating the Same Thing Everyday. Your Guests Or Significant Other Would Appreciate The Thought And Finding New Things To Try Each Day Keeps The Mind Moving And Improves The Palette.
